What To Expect For 2019

Dry, warm and Windy....This is apparently what the normal Fall and Winter weather is like along the the Denver front Range. At least that's what it's been over the last several seasons. 2018 was certainly no exception. The Front Range, experienced the warmest and driest year in 108 years. The previous 5 years were record setting as well.

These chronic drought conditions are taking their toll on our trees, shrubs and lawns. Root decline leads to lack of vigor, poor growth and stress which compromises the plant's resistance to insect and disease pathogens.

The warm, dry Winter we are experiencing has me concerned that bark boring insects this season will not only be more prolific than ever but will also be flying earlier than ever.

WE WILL BE STARTING OUR SPRUCE AND PINE PREVENTATIVE TREATMENTS FOR BARK BORING INSECTS EARLIER THIS SEASON; HOPEFULLY BY FEBRUARY 1ST. IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE TREATMENTS ON YOUR PROPOSAL, PLEASE DON'T DELAY IN RENEWING SO THAT WE ARE SURE TO COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION IN A TIMELY MANNER

Emerald Ash Borer has continued to spread through Boulder County and has now been found in Lafayette. Currently, Knothead Tree and Lawn does not have any customers close enough to these affected areas to consider specific treatments to prevent Emerald Ash Borer. However, I am still recommending preventative treatments for your Ash trees for the continuing and ever-present Ash / Lilac Borer.

Bacterial Fire blight disease which is primarily transmitted by pollinating insects, was extraordinarily bad this season on our Apple, Crabapple, Hawthorn and Pear trees. This was due to an extremely successful blooming season (and subsequently, amazing fruiting year). The only treatment for this is winter pruning.

In summary, PRAY for snow (now, not in May), winter water, deep root fertilize in the Spring, treat preventively for bark boring insects in the Spring and get your trees pruned up before we get heavy, wet snows that may damage them.
